Most webcams work fine out of the box, but default settings are tuned for video calls — not streaming. A few adjustments make the image cleaner and more consistent.
Disable auto-exposure
Auto-exposure is your camera constantly adjusting brightness based on what it sees. On a stream, this shows up as the image brightening when you lean back and darkening when you lean forward. Viewers notice. Fix it by setting a manual exposure value in OBS (right-click camera source → Properties → Configure Video) and locking it there.
Target exposure: your face should land in the mid-tones, not blown out (white) and not underexposed (dark). Adjust your lighting first to get your face well-lit, then lock exposure at that setting.
Fix white balance
Auto white balance shifts when you move, changing the apparent color temperature of your image mid-stream. Set a manual white balance matched to your lighting source: 5500–6500K for daylight-balanced ring lights or key lights. If your lighting is tungsten/warm, 3000–3500K. Lock it once and leave it.
Reduce oversharpen
Budget webcams are almost always over-sharpened. The aggressive edge enhancement makes skin texture look artificial — every pore enhanced, every hair outlined. In the camera control panel (Configure Video in OBS properties), find the sharpness slider and reduce it by 20–30%. The image will look softer at first but more natural, and streaming compression handles it better.
Frame rate: 30fps vs 60fps
30fps is the standard and looks fine for a face cam. 60fps is noticeably smoother if you move your hands a lot, gesture, or stream physical content. Not worth upgrading your camera for, but if your webcam supports 1080p60 (most Logitech C920-tier cams do), it’s worth enabling.
OBS video settings to match
Settings → Video: Base Resolution should match your streaming canvas (usually 1920×1080). Output Resolution is what gets streamed (1920×1080 for 1080p). FPS: match your camera source (30 or 60). Downscale Filter: Lanczos for best quality when downscaling, Bilinear for performance.
