HDR on monitors is one of the most misunderstood specs in consumer electronics. The label covers everything from monitors that barely differ from non-HDR to panels that genuinely transform how content looks. Here’s what the acronym means, what the tiers actually deliver, and how to tell the difference before you buy.
What HDR means
HDR stands for High Dynamic Range. It refers to a display’s ability to show a wider range between its darkest blacks and brightest whites than standard displays (SDR — Standard Dynamic Range). HDR content carries metadata specifying the brightness and color information for each scene; an HDR-capable display interprets this metadata to reproduce the intended image more accurately.
Three things need to be true for HDR to work: the display must support HDR, the content must be HDR, and the signal path must carry HDR (HDMI 2.0+, DisplayPort 1.4+, or USB-C with DP Alt Mode).
HDR tiers: VESA DisplayHDR certification
VESA (the standards body) created the DisplayHDR certification to give buyers a consistent benchmark. The certification numbers correspond to peak brightness requirements.
DisplayHDR 400
400 nits peak brightness. The lowest certification tier. Most displays at this level use edge-lit backlights with no local dimming — they just get bright. Black levels don’t improve. In practice, HDR 400 looks barely different from SDR on most content. Honest assessment: it’s marketing compliance, not a meaningful HDR experience.
DisplayHDR 600
600 nits peak. Some monitors at this level include basic local dimming. A step up from 400 but still limited. You may see noticeable improvement in bright highlights on HDR content — stars against a dark sky, light sources in dark environments — but shadow detail and black levels remain compromised without proper local dimming.
DisplayHDR 1000
1,000 nits peak. Where HDR starts to deliver a real difference. Most HDR 1000 certified monitors include full-array local dimming. Bright highlights are genuinely brighter. Dark areas stay darker. This is the tier where HDR content looks meaningfully different from SDR. Mini-LED monitors commonly land here.
DisplayHDR True Black (OLED)
A separate certification track for OLED displays. Because OLED pixels turn off completely for black, the black level is 0.0005 nits or below — far better than any LCD can achieve regardless of brightness. OLED’s HDR performance doesn’t come from peak brightness but from the contrast ratio between bright highlights and absolute black.
HDR content formats
HDR10: The most common open standard. Used on UHD Blu-ray, streaming services, and most gaming platforms. Static metadata — one brightness target for the entire file. Widely supported.
HDR10+: Samsung’s extension of HDR10 with dynamic metadata — brightness targets adjust scene-by-scene. Better tone mapping on supported displays. Less common than HDR10 but growing.
Dolby Vision: Licensed format with dynamic metadata. Highest quality mastering standard in streaming (Netflix, Apple TV+). Requires Dolby Vision certification on both the display and the source. Common on TVs, less common on PC monitors.
HLG (Hybrid Log-Gamma): Broadcast standard for live HDR content. Used by BBC, NHK, and other broadcasters. Compatible with SDR displays (shows SDR image) and HDR displays (shows HDR image) without switching.
HDR on PC: the Windows situation
Windows HDR has a complicated history. Auto HDR (added in Windows 11) upscales SDR games to simulated HDR using AI processing. It works reasonably well on good HDR displays. On HDR 400 panels, it often makes SDR content look worse — colors are more saturated but not more accurate.
Practical advice: on an HDR 400 monitor, leave Windows HDR off. On an HDR 1000+ monitor with local dimming, Windows Auto HDR is worth enabling for gaming and video. On OLED, HDR is a genuine improvement across games, video, and supported applications.
