The MageGee MK-Box hits a sweet spot in the budget compact keyboard market. At around $30, it delivers a 68-key layout with dedicated arrow keys, a detachable cable, and red linear switches that feel smoother than most keyboards twice its price.
The 68-key layout is the main reason to pick the MK-Box over a true 60% board. Dedicated arrow keys and a few extra function keys make the transition from a full-size keyboard much easier. You do not have to relearn where your arrows are or remember which FN combination to use while you are in the middle of navigating a document or a game. For anyone who has used full-size or tenkeyless boards their whole life, that alone is worth it.
The build quality surprises at this price. The black-and-grey two-tone case looks clean, the kickstand has two height settings, and the cable is detachable via USB-A. Detachable cables are rare at $30. It means you can route the cable cleanly without the keyboard being fixed to it, and a damaged cable is a cheap fix.
Red linear switches feel smooth right out of the box. Full N-key anti-ghosting means every keypress registers even during fast, multi-key gaming inputs. The blue LED backlighting is the one real limitation. It is single color only, with 16 brightness and pattern modes. If you need RGB, this is not the board.
Build is plastic through and through, and ABS keycaps will develop a shine with heavy use. No wireless option. But for a wired compact that just works at $30, the MK-Box is one of the better options available.
Verdict
The MageGee MK-Box is the right pick for anyone moving from full-size to compact who is not ready to give up dedicated arrow keys. Solid build, smooth switches, great value.
