What They Have in Common
Both are true 60% keyboards with 61 keys. Both use USB-C with a detachable cable. Both have optical-style switches. Both have RGB lighting. At first glance, the spec overlap is surprising given the price gap.
Where the GK61 SE Holds Its Own
The GK61 SE uses optical switches too, which keeps it competitive on actuation tech. You are not getting contact-based budget mechanical switches — you get light-beam registration. For $25, that is genuinely good.
The form factor is identical — true 60%, 61 keys, compact. If desk space and mouse room is your primary goal, the GK61 SE delivers that at the lowest possible price.
Where the Razer Pulls Ahead
Switch quality. Razer’s Linear Optical Purple switches are pre-lubed and rated to 100 million keystrokes. The GK61 SE’s optical switches work, but the finish and feel are not comparable. The Razer switches are smoother right out of the box.
Keycaps. Doubleshot PBT on the Razer versus ABS on the GK61. The GK61’s keycaps will shine and wear; the Razer’s will not. Over 1-2 years of daily use, you will feel this difference every time you type.
Lighting quality. Per-key Chroma RGB with 16.8 million colors and Synapse software versus standard RGB modes. Not comparable if lighting matters.
Build. The Razer case feels dense and premium. The GK61 SE flexes more and feels plasticky. Both work fine, but one feels like a tool and the other feels like a product.
The Honest Take
For a first compact keyboard, the GK61 SE at $25 is the right call. Low risk, works well, has a great modding community. If you decide 60% is for you, upgrade to the Razer. If you decide compact is not your thing, you spent $25 to find out.
The Razer is the forever board. The GK61 is the entry point. They serve different purposes, which is why both made the best 60% keyboards list.
