The CHERRY XTRFY MX 3.1 is what happens when Cherry — the company that invented the modern mechanical switch — decides to make a keyboard themselves. After acquiring XTRFY in 2022, Cherry used the brand to launch a full lineup of gaming boards using their freshest switch revision, the MX2A. The MX 3.1 is the wired flagship.

You get a full-size layout with a numpad, a CNC-machined aluminum top plate, double-shot PBT keycaps that won’t shine after a year of use, and the new MX2A Brown switches factory-installed. The MX2A revision adds factory lube and reduced stem wobble compared to the classic MX Brown, so it feels noticeably smoother out of the box.

Sound and Feel

This is the smoothest stock-keyboard tactile experience you can buy without lubing switches yourself. The MX2A Brown bump is subtle but consistent across the board. Stabilizers on the spacebar and shift keys are decent — not boutique-level, but no rattle to speak of. The board weighs in heavy thanks to the aluminum plate, which kills any deck flex during fast typing.

Build Quality

The aluminum top plate is the headline. Underneath, the case is plastic but thick — no creaking, no bow. The detachable USB-C cable is woven, the keycaps are double-shot PBT (legends won’t wear off), and the included keycap puller and switch puller are a nice touch. Cherry is signaling that this is meant to last.

Gaming Performance

The 8000Hz polling rate is overkill for 99% of players but future-proofs the board against ever-rising monitor refresh rates. N-key rollover, anti-ghosting, and on-the-fly macros are all standard. The MX2A Brown switches register fast enough that you’ll never notice the tactile bump in fast-paced games — and the bump genuinely helps prevent missed presses while typing.

Software

The Cherry Utility software is functional. You get per-key RGB customization, polling rate settings, macro recording, and onboard profile storage. It’s not as polished as Razer Synapse or Logitech G Hub, but it doesn’t phone home or push notifications either. Plug-and-play works fine without it.

Who It’s For

Anyone who wants real, current-revision Cherry MX Brown switches in a board that won’t fall apart in two years. Gamers, programmers, writers, and office warriors who care about typing feel all get something here. The full-size layout is the only catch — if you want TKL or 75%, the K5V2 (Cherry XTRFY’s compact board) is a better fit.

Verdict

The MX 3.1 is the easiest Cherry MX Brown keyboard recommendation in 2026. Real Cherry, real MX2A, PBT keycaps, aluminum build. Worth every penny of the price tag if Browns are what you want.
