No one wants a desk that makes your heart beat faster than usual when an extra item is placed on it. This goes to say that sturdiness is an important factor to be considered when buying or making a desk, and one way to know how sturdy a desk is by the thickness of the desktop.
The different materials that are used to make desks make some desks sturdier than the other, but outside the scope of the materials, at what level is the thickness of the computer desk considered suitable- in other words, how thick should a computer desk be?
If you’re using Oak, Cherry wood, or MDF to build your computer desk, or if you prefer to use a computer desk made out of oak wood, cherry wood, pinewood, or MDF the thickness of the computer desk should be around 1 to 1/2 inches and 1 to 1/4 inches thick (6.35mm to 12.7mm). You can increase this depth if you’re making a large computer desk size but the desk will be heavier.
If you prefer to use a computer desk that is made out of plywood, or fiberboard, the recommended thickness of the computer desk should be 3/4 inches thick (18mm to 19mm thick). This is to prevent wobbling of the desk during use and to ensure its sturdiness when different computer accessories are placed on it.
